Davis Hartwell of Crosspoint Christian is having quite the summer.
The golfer, who already qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, finished second in the PGA High School Golf Championship last week in Frisco, Texas.
Hartwell shot a 13-under 203, one stroke behind medalist Josiah Hakala of New Hampshire, who set a tournament record. There was a three-way tie for third at 9 under.
The field of more than 300 players consisted of golfers who won their respective high school state championships as a team or as an individual.
Hartwell cruised to a 10-shot victory in the Oregon School Activities Association’s Class 3A/2A/1A championship as a sophomore this spring at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell.
The 54-hole event in Texas was contested July 1-3 over three courses: Fields Ranch East and West at PGA Frisco and the WestRidge Golf Course in McKinney.
Hartwell and Hakala shared the lead entering the final round, with Hakala firing a 65 at WestRidge and Hartwell shooting a 66 at Fields Ranch West. Hartwell opened with a 68 at Fields Ranch East and shot a 69 at WestRidge. His total eclipsed the previous tourney record by three strokes.
Hartwell is competing this week at the IMG Academy Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif., the site of an annual PGA Tour event and a former U.S. Open host.
He is scheduled to compete in the 76th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, July 22-27 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
